A reference guide to the Earth Element (土, Tǔ) in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Feng Shui – its associations, qualities, and resonances.

Earth is the element of late summer, of afternoon, of the centre. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it governs nourishment, digestion, and the capacity to receive and transform — both food and experience. In Feng Shui, it anchors the heart of a space and the relationships within it. The Earth element asks us to slow down, to be held, to trust that the ground beneath us is enough.

As the author of this journal, I recognise Earth's patterns intimately, perhaps too intimately: worry (Spleen) in its imbalanced form is a circling - the mind returning again and again to the same ground, unable to digest, or remove, what it has taken in.
Earth energy, when depleted, loses its capacity to transform experience into nourishment. The body may crave sweetness; the spirit may crave reassurance. We find ourselves running away from what we don't want to bring into our worlds.
When Earth balance is restored, perhaps by honouring our own personal values and wantings - thinking becomes clear and purposeful, and the sense of being held (by home, by community, by the earth itself) returns. You can make the circling stop. That much I can tell you from the other side of it.

Energy Balance — The Sheng & Ko Cycles
Nurture Cycle (Sheng 生)
- Fire feeds Earth — Fire is the mother of Earth; ash becomes soil. Fire's warmth and transformation create the conditions for Earth to thrive and nourish.
- Earth feeds Metal — Earth is the mother of Metal; ore is born from the ground. Earth's density and abundance give rise to Metal's structure and clarity.
Control Cycle (Ko 克)
- Wood controls Earth — Tree roots break up and penetrate soil; Wood energy keeps Earth from becoming stagnant, overly dense, or smothering.
- Earth controls Water — Earth contains and channels water; Earth energy keeps Water from flooding and dispersing without direction or form.

A Nod to Chakra Resonance – Where Earth Meets the Solar Plexus
The Earth element carries a natural resonance with the Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) – the centre of personal power, digestion, and self-worth. The Spleen meridian's energy rises through the centre of the body, governing not only the transformation of food but the transformation of thought into clarity and intention. When Earth is imbalanced, the solar plexus may feel unsettled – a low hum of anxiety, a difficulty trusting one's own judgement, or a tendency to seek external reassurance. Citrine and yellow jasper support the warming and steadying of this centre, while tiger's eye brings grounded confidence. As Earth finds balance, the capacity to nourish oneself – and others – becomes effortless rather than effortful.
