A reference guide to the Fire Element (火, Huǒ) in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Feng Shui – its associations, qualities, and resonances.

Fire is the element of high summer — of noon, of the south, of the Heart in full expression. It governs our capacity for joy, connection, and the quiet luminosity of a spirit at ease. In its balance, Fire warms without burning; in its excess, it flickers and scatters. In its deficiency, the light dims.

As the author of this journal, a distinction I have come to understand through my own experience: joy (Heart) in its balanced form is a quiet, steady warmth – not the frantic brightness of excess Fire, but a settled luminosity.
It is the feeling of a summer afternoon with people you love, unhurried, held in warmth and laughter — not performed happiness, but the kind that simply arises when the Heart is at ease.
When Fire is deficient, the spirit (Shen) dims; when it blazes unchecked, the mind scatters and sleep becomes elusive. Anxiety in the Fire element has a different quality to Water's fear – it is restless, social, and surface-level, a flickering rather than a deep trembling.
This is one way I have come to sit with these emotions in the body – your own experience may illuminate it differently.

Energy Balance — The Sheng & Ko Cycles
Nurture Cycle (Sheng 生)
- Wood feeds Fire — Wood is the mother of Fire; it fuels and sustains the flame. Strong Wood energy supports and nourishes Fire.
- Fire feeds Earth — Fire is the mother of Earth; ash becomes soil. Fire's warmth and transformation create the conditions for Earth to thrive.
Control Cycle (Ko 克)
- Water controls Fire — Water extinguishes flame; Water energy keeps Fire in check, preventing excess or burnout.
- Fire controls Metal — Fire melts and shapes Metal; Fire energy tempers and refines Metal, preventing it from becoming rigid or cold.

A Nod to Chakra Resonance – Where Fire Meets the Heart
The Fire element carries a natural resonance with the Heart Chakra (Anahata) – the centre of love, compassion, and connection.
The Heart meridian governs the Shen, the spirit that dwells within us and expresses itself through the eyes and the voice.
When Fire is balanced, the heart is open and the spirit shines clearly; when it is depleted, the eyes lose their lustre and joy becomes effortful.
Crystal Healing: Carnelian and garnet support the rekindling of inner warmth, while rose quartz bridges Fire and the gentle opening of the heart.
As Fire finds balance, joy becomes less a performance and more a quiet, steady glow.
