A reference guide to the Metal Element (金, Jīn) in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Feng Shui – its associations, qualities, and resonances.

Metal is the element of autumn — of dusk, of the west, of the Lungs drawing inward. It governs our capacity to discern, to refine, and to release what no longer serves. In its balance, Metal brings clarity and integrity; in its excess, rigidity and perfectionism; in its deficiency, grief that cannot move.

TCM – Emotional & Mental
- Balanced Metal: clarity, self-worth, the ability to grieve and release, discernment, inspiration
- Imbalanced Metal: grief, sadness, rigidity, perfectionism, difficulty letting go, emotional numbness
As the author of this journal, Imbalanced Metal arrived in my life at the very beginning - by a tragedy handed down the lineage: I have carried a retained "fear paralysis withdrawal Reflex' well into my adult life - only integrating it when I finally chose to listen to my own inspiration and act on it - rather than listening to (and staying stuck in) the grief created by situations, or social opinions, from my inhibited inner callings of personal creativity.
Grief is not a weakness but the natural response to loss, in my case the loss of my own spontaneity and natural enthusiasm, in its place an always forced held breath and extremely observant startled eyes.
When Metal is balanced, grief moves through us like autumn wind through free-falling leaves; we feel it fully and release our tears as the calming of the Water element.
When Metal is stuck, grief is a holding on and an unexpressed joy for life.
The Large Intestine asks the same question at a physical level: What are you holding that no longer serves your body or your life? Is that holding on killing your inspired self expression.

Energy Balance — The Sheng & Ko Cycles
Nurture Cycle (Sheng 生)
- Earth feeds Metal — Earth is the mother of Metal; minerals and ores are born from the earth. Earth's stability and nourishment give rise to Metal's clarity and precision.
- Metal feeds Water — Metal is the mother of Water; minerals enrich and give rise to water from the earth. Metal's refinement and contraction create the conditions for Water's depth and flow.
Control Cycle (Ko 克)
- Fire controls Metal — Fire melts and transforms Metal; Fire energy prevents Metal from becoming too rigid, cold, or unyielding.
- Metal controls Wood — Metal cuts and shapes Wood; Metal energy provides the pruning force that gives Wood form and direction.

A Nod to Chakra Resonance – Where Metal Meets the Crown
The Metal element carries a natural resonance with the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) – the centre of clarity, higher consciousness, and connection to something beyond the self. The Lung meridian governs the breath – our most immediate and constant connection to the world beyond our skin. Each inhale is an act of receiving; each exhale, an act of release. When Metal is balanced, the breath is full and free, the mind clear, the spirit open. Clear quartz and selenite sit at this threshold, supporting the movement from mental clutter to crystalline clarity, from holding on to graceful release.
