As the author of this journal, a distinction I have come to understand through my own experience: Fear (Kidney) tends to root itself in the past – in survival memory, ancestral patterns, and deep constitutional imprinting at the level of Jing. Anxiety (Bladder) tends to project forward – a restless scanning of future threat. Yet that future anxiety, on closer examination, is rarely truly about the future; it is the past casting its shadow forward.
I have known the particular suffering of excitement with the brakes of fear or anxiety fully applied – this leads to trembling and shaking like car wheels juddering if you brake too hard for the speed you are going.
Fear and anxiety are actually our way-markers – they tell us everything we need to know – sitting with these feelings until we hear the thoughts, that come before the emotions, and really listening to what they are telling us will give us the most rewards and bring us nearer toward the life we ideally dream about, as we drop the beliefs and attitudes we know aren’t ours in the first place.

Nurture Cycle (Sheng 生)
- Metal feeds Water — Metal is the mother of Water; minerals enrich and give rise to water from the earth. Strong Metal energy supports and nourishes Water.
- Water feeds Wood — Water is the mother of Wood; it nourishes roots and enables growth. Water’s depth and flow create the conditions for Wood to rise and flourish.
Control Cycle (Ko 克)
- Earth controls Water — Earth contains and channels water; Earth energy keeps Water from flooding and dispersing without direction.
- Water controls Fire — Water extinguishes flame; Water energy keeps Fire in check, preventing excess heat or burnout.

The Water element carries a natural resonance with the Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) – the centre of communication, truth, and authentic self-expression. The Kidney meridian’s external pathway ends at the clavicle, placing fear’s influence directly at the gateway of the voice. When Water is imbalanced, fear may suppress spontaneous expression – the voice withdraws before it is spoken. Aquamarine sits between the heart and throat, supporting the courage to speak from deep inner knowing. As Water finds balance, willpower rises and the voice becomes one’s own again.
