A reference guide to the Wood Element (木, Mù) in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Feng Shui – its associations, qualities, and resonances.

Wood is the element of spring — of dawn, of the east, of the Liver surging upward with new growth. It governs our capacity for vision, planning, and the courage to act on what we see. In its balance, Wood bends without breaking; in its excess, it pushes and strains; in its deficiency, the will falters and direction is lost.

As the author of this journal, turning up the dial on Liver energy has helped me tremendously. Anger (Liver) in its healthy form is the energy of boundaries and forward movement — it says: this matters, I will act.
Its partner, the Gallbladder, holds the courage to decide — when it falters, we can circle endlessly without resolution. In my own experience as a child, I chose to disassociate from feelings of irritability, frustration, and anger, and simply hide — leaving me boundary-less as an adult. I had carefully switched off my choices, and in doing so, switched off my values.
The Wood element is the Official of the Ideal Plan — not following our own ideal plan, by our own action, ensures we will be led by the plans and values of others.
Deciding to be curious again as an adult — about playful, creative choices, rather than listening to shame feelings — becomes something you can actually work with, until your free child gets uncovered again. Or perhaps, for the very first time.

Energy Balance — The Sheng & Ko Cycles
Nurture Cycle (Sheng 生)
- Water feeds Wood — Water is the mother of Wood; it nourishes roots and enables growth. Water's depth and stillness create the conditions for Wood to rise and flourish.
- Wood feeds Fire — Wood is the mother of Fire; it provides the fuel for warmth, passion, and transformation. Wood's upward energy ignites and sustains Fire.
Control Cycle (Ko 克)
- Metal controls Wood — Metal cuts and shapes Wood; Metal energy provides the pruning force that gives Wood form and direction.
- Wood controls Earth — Wood's roots penetrate and break up Earth; Wood energy prevents Earth from becoming stagnant or overly fixed.

A Nod to Chakra Resonance – Where Wood Meets the Heart
The Wood element carries a natural resonance with the Heart Chakra (Anahata) – the centre of love, compassion, and connection. The Liver meridian's pathway rises through the chest and connects to the heart and lungs, weaving Wood's visionary energy into the seat of feeling. When Wood is balanced, the heart opens with generosity and clear purpose. When Wood is blocked, the heart contracts – love becomes conditional, vision narrows. Green stones such as malachite and jade sit at this crossing point, supporting the movement from constriction to expansion, from resentment to renewal.
