A reference guide to the Heart Chakra (Anāhata) - the bridge between earth and sky, the centre of love, compassion, and connection.

Anāhata - meaning unstruck or unbeaten - refers to the sound that exists without two things striking together: the sound of pure being, of love that needs no cause. Located at the centre of the chest, the Heart Chakra is the meeting point of the three lower chakras (earth, body, self) and the three upper chakras (expression, vision, spirit). It is where the personal becomes universal.

Core Qualities

  • Love - both giving and receiving
  • Compassion and empathy
  • Forgiveness and healing
  • Connection and belonging
  • Gratitude and appreciation
  • Openness and vulnerability
  • Self-love and self-acceptance

Location & Position

  • Position: Centre of the chest, at the level of the heart
  • The fourth of the seven main chakras - the central bridge of the system
  • Sits between the Solar Plexus (below) and the Throat (above)

Element, Colour & Sound

  • Element: Air
  • Colour: Emerald green (and sometimes rose pink for the higher heart)
  • Seed sound (bija mantra): YAM
  • Sense: Touch

Physical Body Associations

  • Governs: Heart, lungs, circulatory system, arms, hands, thymus gland
  • The thymus - the seat of the immune system - sits within the Heart Chakra’s field
  • Imbalance may show as heart or lung issues, immune weakness, tension in the chest and shoulders, or difficulty breathing deeply

Emotional & Energetic

  • Balanced Heart: The ability to love and be loved freely; genuine compassion without martyrdom; forgiveness that liberates; a felt sense of connection to life and others
  • Imbalanced Heart: Grief, loneliness, and isolation; difficulty trusting or opening; codependency or emotional withdrawal; resentment and bitterness; giving without receiving
▸ A Personal Reflection — The Heart Chakra

I’m not sure I’ve healed my Heart Chakra. What I know is that I’m learning.

Learning to let it be. To let others be - without taking their struggles personally.

I am aware now that the most difficult of behaviours, is when someone is hurting in some way, or simply unaware of their own needs, or power. It is easier to hold energetic space for them when we remember that.

I find I’m more compassionate and less defensive because I can see deeper - beneath the words and the behaviour to what’s actually going on.

And when I don’t know how to hold someone - when it’s too much or too complicated - I’ve learned to ask for help. The image that comes to me is those vast, gentle hands. Cupped. Holding. Not fixing.

It seems to work.

► Working with the Heart Chakra
  • Breathwork: The Heart’s element is Air – conscious breathing, particularly into the chest and upper back, directly nourishes it
  • Gratitude practice: A daily practice of noticing what you love and appreciate opens the Heart gently and consistently
  • Nature and beauty: The Heart responds to beauty – flowers, music, art, the sight of the sea
  • Self-compassion: Treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer a beloved friend
  • Crystal work: Placing Rose Quartz or Green Aventurine on the chest during meditation or rest
  • Mantra: I love. I am loved. I am open.
► The Heart Chakra & the Five Elements

The Heart Chakra’s element is Air, and it resonates most deeply with the Fire Element in TCM – the element of the Heart, joy, and the Shen (spirit). The Metal Element also touches the Heart through its association with grief – the emotion that moves through the Heart when love has been lost or withheld.

► The Heart Chakra & the Schumann Resonance

The Heart Chakra generates its own electromagnetic field – measurably larger than that of the brain. During periods of elevated Schumann Resonance, the Heart field may feel particularly activated – heightened empathy, emotional sensitivity, or a deep longing for connection. Heart-centred practices – breathwork, gratitude, time in nature – help the Heart field remain coherent and strong.

The Heart Chakra in the Full System

The Heart is the pivot point of the entire chakra system – three chakras below, three above, with the Heart at the centre. It is the place where the personal self (Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus) meets the transpersonal (Throat, Third Eye, Crown). Without an open Heart, the upper chakras can become ungrounded and disconnected; without the upper chakras, the Heart can become lost in personal emotion. The Heart is where we learn to love both ourselves and something larger than ourselves – at the same time.
