A reference guide to the Root Chakra (Mūlādhāra) – the foundation of the chakra system, governing survival, safety, and the right to exist.
Mūlādhāra – from the Sanskrit mūla (root) and ādhāra (support or base) – is the first of the seven main chakras and the foundation upon which all others rest. Located at the base of the spine, it governs our most primal relationship with life: the felt sense of safety, belonging, and having a right to be here. When the Root is steady, everything above it can flourish.
Core Qualities
- Safety and security
- Survival instinct
- Physical grounding
- Belonging
- Stability and structure
- Trust in life
- The right to exist

- The first of the seven main chakras
- Sits directly above the Earth Star Chakra in the full system

- Element: Earth

- When the Root is depleted, the body often shows it through fatigue, lower back pain, immune weakness, or digestive issues
Emotional & Energetic
- Balanced Root: Feeling grounded, safe, and at home in the body; a quiet confidence in life's basic provision; physical vitality; the ability to be fully present
- Imbalanced Root: Fear, anxiety, and hypervigilance; financial worry; a sense of not belonging; disconnection from the body; restlessness or inability to settle
▸ A Personal Reflection — The Root Chakra Healed
As the author of this journal, the Root Chakra has been one of my deepest areas of personal work. For much of my life, belonging felt conditional - something to be earned by being silent, and contained. Tip toeing on egg shells incase my personality disrupted the day. I didn't feel, or accept the feeling, of simply being welcome, of arriving somewhere and being wanted without having to offer anything in return, or tone down my enthusiasm.
The Root Chakra healed is not dramatic. It is the inner quiet warmth of a seat in the sunshine, a cold drink placed in your hand without being asked for, a view you are allowed to simply enjoy and breath in. It is the radical simplicity of feeling permitted to exist and rest, or chat and be listened to - just because you are there.
When the Root is open, safety is not something you have to create or defend. It is something you inhabit. And from that place, everything else becomes possible.
► Crystals & Stones for the Root Chakra
The Root Chakra responds to dense, earthy, red and black stones that carry the frequency of stability and physical grounding.
- Red Jasper – the stone of endurance; slow, steady, sustaining energy; deeply nurturing to the Root
- Garnet – vitality, passion, and physical strength; rekindles the will to live and thrive
- Smoky Quartz – transmutes fear and anxiety; anchors scattered energy back into the body
- Black Tourmaline – protection and grounding; creates a strong energetic boundary
- Hematite – iron-rich and magnetic; pulls energy down into the body and into the Earth
- Bloodstone – courage and vitality; supports the physical body through challenge and change
► Working with the Root Chakra
- Movement: Walking, yoga, dance – anything that brings awareness into the legs and feet
- Earthing: Bare feet on natural ground; gardening; sitting against a tree
- Breathwork: Slow, deep belly breathing to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and signal safety to the body
- Crystal work: Placing Red Jasper or Hematite at the base of the spine or between the feet during meditation
- Nourishment: Root vegetables, warming foods, regular meals – the Root responds to being physically cared for
- Mantra: I am safe. I am here. I belong.
► The Root Chakra & the Five Elements
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Root Chakra's qualities of survival, fear, and deep vitality resonate most strongly with the Water Element – the element of the Kidneys, ancestral essence (Jing), and the will to live. The Earth Element also resonates here, through its qualities of nourishment, stability, and the centre.
► The Root Chakra & the Schumann Resonance
The Root Chakra is the first point in the body to register shifts in the Earth's electromagnetic field. When the Schumann Resonance spikes, the Root often responds with restlessness, fatigue, or a heightened sense of unease – the body's survival system registering a change in the planetary field. Grounding practices and Root-resonant crystals can help the body integrate these shifts.

The Root Chakra in the Full System
The Root Chakra is the foundation of the seven main chakras – but it is not the beginning of the system. Below it lies the Earth Star, anchoring us in the body of the planet itself. Above it, the Sacral Chakra builds on the Root's stability to explore creativity, pleasure, and flow. A well-grounded Root makes everything above it possible.
